NYNJ Railroad: Switching Operations in Brooklyn, NY, with KLW Rebuild Duo
The NYNJ Railroad is a shortline owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that operates one of the world’s only railcar barges across New York Harbor between Brooklyn, NY, and Port Jersey, NJ, in addition to serving customers on both sides of the water. Each weekday, the railroad collects cars from the New York and Atlantic Railway interchange in Brooklyn and the CSX interchange in Port Jersey and loads them onto the barge to be sent across the harbor. The railroad maintains a roster that includes an EMD SW1500, an SW1200, and three KLW SE10Bs, unique switchers rebuilt from older models by the Knoxville Locomotive Works. In the Fall of 2018, the NYNJ decided to get rid of their second SW1200 due to mechanical problems. In its place, the railroad temporarily leased KLW #253, a one-of-a-kind MK TE-47-4E switcher, which was rebuilt from an Alco S2 originally built in 1944 for the Manufacturers Railroad Company. On the morning of September 13th, 2018, we see the NYNJ Railroad shuffling around cars in Brooklyn’s 69th Street Yard, which were brought in the previous night by NYAR RS20. Powering today’s train is SE10B #5101 and KLW #253, which would be returned to Tennessee only a few months later. Thanks for watching!
