Ship Vinyl Safely: Stop the Sleeve Split The Vinyl Packaging Problem That Record Labels Could Fix Today Why are brand-new vinyl records still arriving with split, pierced or damaged outer sleeves? In this video, I am launching a new Now Spinning Magazine campaign calling on record labels, distributors and retailers to change the way vinyl records are packed for shipping. When a record is left inside its printed outer sleeve, movement during transportation can cause the vinyl to punch through the top, bottom or spine of the sleeve. The result is a brand-new record arriving with avoidable damage before it has even reached the collector. There is a simple solution: remove the vinyl record from the outer sleeve before shipping and place it securely alongside the sleeve or inside the centre of a gatefold. Some labels, including InsideOutMusic, already do this—and it works. Now Spinning Magazine previously campaigned for poly-lined inner sleeves to become standard with new vinyl releases. Thanks to support from the collecting community, a growing number of labels have adopted them. Now it is time to address another major quality-control issue.
