In theory, there are only four parenting styles. Authoritarian parents are controlling and demand obedience without considering the child's perspective. Permissive parents are loving but don't impose any control. There are no rules. Authoritative parents are firm but loving. They encourage independence, within limits. Neglectful parents are disinterested and often uninvolved in their children's lives. Recently, a fifth style has been proposed, but we'll return to this later.
