The disciples looked at the man and asked: “Who sinned, that this man was born blind?” However, Jesus did not look for the cause of sin in the suffering man. Jesus turned the disciples' gaze from past wrongs to the work of God that must be accomplished now. “It is not because of the sin of this man or his parents, but the works of God that must be revealed in him.” This does not mean that God caused a person to be born in suffering simply to demonstrate His power. Rather than explaining the cause of the suffering, Jesus shows what must be done now for the person who is suffering. The disciples asked, “Whose fault is it?” but Jesus replied, “Now there is work of God that we must do.” Jesus’ act of making clay from saliva and dust and applying it to his eyes brings to mind the creation of man in Genesis. The Creator who made man from dust creates a new life for one person. The greatest miracle that occurred in this event was not merely that his eyes were opened. A person who was once the object of people’s judgment became the subject telling his own story. A beggar rose up and walked a new path. A person who was silent became a witness to Jesus. A person cast out of the community found a new belonging in Jesus. A miracle does not end with the resolution of a single problem. A true miracle renews a person, changes the direction of their life, and raises them up as a witness to God’s love. Today, we too must ask. “Whose fault is it?” “Why did this happen?” Do not dwell on these questions alone, but ask: “What is God’s work that we must do for this person right now?” “How does God want to renew me through this?” You must ask these questions. Jesus says: “While it is still day, we must do the work of him who sent me.” It is still day. There is still time to love. There is still time to reach out a hand. There is still time to lift people up and perform God’s work.
