Over the years that I've been passionate about watchmaking, I've had the time to watch many videos on YouTube, and you may feel the same way I do: that we're not presented with enough watches that stand out from the crowd, that aren't among the few brands that come up again and again, or the same designs we see all the time. If there's one thing I love about watchmaking, it's standing out from the crowd. It's searching for the piece, whether new or even vintage, that will make me say, "Where did that come from?" or "I've never seen anything like that." Today, thanks to or because of the genius of the late Gerald Genta, the sporty chic look of the 1970s is most often propelled to the ranks of the most popular design, whether for major brands or independent houses. Even if this isn't always the design we find, today's timepieces lack eccentricity, shapes, and madness. If you look at vintage watches from the 1970s, it won't take you long to notice how crazy the designs were! The 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s also have their charm. A worn, weathered watch has a charm you'll never achieve with a new watch, especially one with a simplistic design. The best example that comes to mind is the chronographs of the 1940s. While a gold case, cream dial, and leather strap are almost standard for these pieces, it's their dials that truly stand out. Subdials, date windows, measuring scale, flyback hand—all these elements lend an unrivaled charm and vintage elegance. It's this kind of distinctive piece that I'd like to point you toward today, and more generally, on my channel. To show you that with a little research, you can stumble upon pieces you won't see anywhere else, and that you could build a truly unique collection. Tell me how many watches you know in the comments and if you want an episode 2, because I have so many models to show you to make you dream even more with watches worthy of the name!
