The ustad/shagird (disciple/teacher) tradition is one that is common in many religious and cultural traditions dating back thousands of years. In the Islamic tradition, this is a very practice among the Sufism (people of Tasawuf) where a person become a “mureed” ( meaning one who seeks) of a teacher and joins a “Silsila (meaning chain, link, or connection). In this tradition, the connection between a student and their teacher extends beyond the actual craft or knowledge being shared, resulting in a much deeper and spiritual relationship.
