According to Buddhist cosmology, after death, we transition from the physical body to an intermediate state, called anta-rabhāva in Sanskrit and Bardo in Tibetan. There, we find ourselves in the so-called subtle body of Bardo. We'll discuss this state in a separate video, including the origins of all the traditions associated with the 40 days after death, funeral services, the origins of ghost stories, and the intuitive sense of when a loved one has died. From this intermediate state, we transition to the next birth, whether in a human body on this planet, in a magnificent subtle body in the higher realms, or in a subtle body in the hells or other realms. Buddhist cosmology is extremely broad and profound. As a result of these transitions, our body and the outer layer of our mind undergo significant changes. Moreover, the world we find ourselves in, especially if it's not the same human one, can be extremely different from our previous one. Because all the laws, the flow of time, and the very logic of another world are different. Consequently, it becomes extremely difficult for us to recall this existence, so unlike our current one. There are simple examples that will help us understand this phenomenon and its causes: When you wake up, the dream that was just so vivid, in which you were deeply involved and involved, in which important events occurred, suddenly the memory of it begins to dissolve and slip away. Very quickly. It slips through your fingers like sand, escaping. Observe this process carefully sometime to experience it; it's a very specific sensation, with a special flavor. It can be useful for many practices and, in general, allows us to understand some of the characteristics of our memory through direct experience. And direct experience is the most valuable. You can stop this process of slipping away from your memory of a past dream intentionally, with a special effort of will. All people are capable of this. It is also part of the Buddhist yoga practice of lucid dreaming, including one of the Six Yogas of Naropa. (Six-limbed yoga of Nadapada (Sanskrit: ṣaḍaṅga yoga nāḍapāda) Naropa (Sanskrit: Naḍapāda, 956 – 1040) And lucid dreaming practices are very useful for the practice of dying, since the Bardo of sleep and the Bardo of the afterlife are somewhat similar. And why does the memory of a dream, which was just vivid and yours, suddenly slip away? And sometimes it remains? And why can you influence this process if you want? And from other years, we often remember only bits and pieces. And entire months definitely disappear. Especially if you're now older. But this isn't just not a past birth, it's not even a dream; it's literally and practically your life, and a relatively recent one at that. Thus, memory is erased. But curiously, it doesn't disappear completely. It just goes deeper. There are people who are able to remember everything, down to every hour of their lives. And under hypnosis, many people are able to recall events from very distant past that they thought they had completely forgotten. According to Buddhist practice, remembering past lives is more than possible. But it's very, very difficult.
