Building a 5-Gallon Bookshelf Reef for Clownfish & Anemones

Setting up an ultra-shallow ADA 45F pico reef tank on my bookshelf! I walk through the complete saltwater aquarium setup of this tiny 5-gallon reef, designed specifically to host a pair of clownfish and their anemone. The biggest challenge with a nano reef tank this small is long-term water parameter stability. Invertebrates like anemones are incredibly sensitive to rapid shifts in water chemistry. Inspired by miniature reef aquascapes of Japanese reefers on Instagram, this build leans heavily into a macroalgae tank approach. Using marine macroalgae helps naturally export excess nutrients, preventing nitrates and phosphates from accumulating too quickly in a micro ecosystem. To keep salinity perfectly stable, I’ve also integrated an auto top-off (ATO) system to handle daily evaporation. 🐠 Equipment Used: Tank: ADA 45F Rimless Shallow Glass Aquarium (~5 Gallons) Lighting: AquaIllumination AI Blade Coral Grow (12-Inch) Filter: Oase FiltoSmart 100 Thermo (External Canister Filter) ATO: Kamoer X1 PRO 2 Dosing Pump 🦀 Livestock & Clean-Up Crew (CUC): Pair of Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis) Blue Leg, Scarlet, and Purple Claw Hermit Crabs Trochus Snails (Excellent algae eaters for small tanks) If you love pico tanks and want to see how to maintain a successful bookshelf reef tank, follow for future updates on this system! 0:00 - Intro 0:54 - Equipment 3:45 - Rocks & sand 5:57 - Cycling the tank 7:10 - Adding Clownfish 9:55 - Cleanup Crew (CUC) 10:55 - Algae & Macros 11:53 - Shrimp & Snails 13:07 - 1 Month
