Martyrs of Fraternity Buta - Burundi

This month, Net for God is taking you to the beautiful country of Burundi which is situated in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. This film bears witness to forty young seminarians from Buta who, on 30 April 1997 in the early morning, were brutally beaten to death. These young men preferred to die together and united, rather that to obey an enemy who had ordered them to separate into those who were Hutu and those who were Tutsi. Several of those who managed to escape have testified to have heard this same prayer from the mouths of the dying, “Forgive them, Lord, for they do not know what they are doing.” These young men, at the price of their lives, showed that fraternity between different tribes is possible, and so laid the foundations for a real hope for this country which had endured fifteen tortured years of civil war that had cost hundreds of thousands of human lives. Through this spirit of solidarity which prevailed against violence and hatred, they chose not to betray their ideal of fraternity, which they had built up together through dialogue and prayer during the long months before the attack, a work for unity undertaken with Father Zacharie Bukuru, the principal of the seminary of Buta at the time. These young martyrs show us the way that leads to true peace, the only solution against violence and hatred: FORGIVENESS.
