H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON, LONDON. “Taking hold of eternal life.” 1 Timothy 6:12. “Laying up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of eternal life.” 1 Timothy 6:19. “Taking hold of eternal life.” Note that this precept is preceded by another: “Fight the good fight of the faith.” Those who lay hold of eternal life will have to fight for it. The path of the spiritual life is not easy: we will have to contend for every step of the way it leads us. “Fight the good fight of the faith” would be an accurate translation of the passage, and it is a fight against the world, the flesh, and the devil! If we live for God, we will need to wage a daily battle and trample the powers of death and hell underfoot. We fight the good fight through unwavering faith in the Lord our God: “This is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.” That battle is the battle of faith, fought by faith and through faith. The article should be inserted, and then the words are: “Fight the good fight of the faith.” “Contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.” “Hold fast the pattern of sound words.” It is worth fighting for, even if we resist to the point of shedding our blood! Whoever dies for the faith has given their life for a worthy cause and will find it for eternal life. We can only hope to live for God through faith in Him and in the great Truths He has revealed as the object of our faith. When I say to you, “Take hold of eternal life,” do not imagine that this can be done in a dream, or without awakening your full energies, or even then without that divine help that only faith can provide. Since my text follows the command to “fight the good fight of faith,” it teaches us that the best way to contend for the faith is for us, personally, to take hold of eternal life. You cannot defend the faith with mere reasoning: victory does not come from a series of arguments previously used by learned men; you yourselves must possess the inner life and demonstrate its strength and power in your daily conduct if you are to succeed in the holy war. Those who forget Divine Life soon discard Divine Truth. If life is not in us, we can profess whatever orthodoxy we like, but, in all likelihood, before long we will stray, like others, onto crooked paths.
