The Perfect Grip Routine in Three Steps

When you're first starting out in golf, your intuition can actually steer you the wrong way—especially when it comes to holding the club. Kris Moe shares an easy step by step routine to get your grip right. Most new golfers look down at the grip and immediately put their lead thumb straight down the top of the shaft. It feels natural, but it’s actually one of the worst things you can do for your swing. Your arms naturally want to rotate inward at about a 45-degree angle, so your grip needs to match your body's natural anatomy. In this video, I break down a simple, step-by-step routine to get your hands out of your palms, into your fingers, and working together as a single, powerful unit. ⛳ The Step-by-Step Grip Routine: The Setup: Hold the club up at a 45-degree angle with the leading edge perfectly square (at a right angle to the ground). The Lead Hand (Left Hand for Righties): Place the club across your fingers—from the base of your pinky knuckle down to your index finger. When you wrap your hand over, the crease formed by your thumb and index finger should point toward your right shoulder. The Trail Hand (Right Hand for Righties): Bring it in at that same angle, letting the club sit in the fingers. Snug your trail thumb right into the lifeline of your lead palm. This crease should point toward your right eye or ear, keeping your palms parallel. The "Trigger Finger": Leave a little space on your trail index finger. Think about how you'd hold a stone to skip it across a pond—you use your fingers for power, not your palm! The Pocket Trick: If you're struggling to break the old habit, let the club rest by your front pocket. Reach down naturally—your hand will naturally drop onto the club in the perfect, ergonomically correct position. Mastering fundamentals like the grip, posture, and ball position is the fastest way for any beginner to build a repeatable, powerful golf swing.
