Sur les hauteurs de la ville vient s’installer au début du Moyen Âge une première motte féodale. La ville se développe rapidement grâce au travail du cuir en contrebas. L’Indre et ses affluents deviennent le poumon économique et verdoyant de la cité médiévale, qui se protège désormais derrière les murs épais d’une enceinte fortifiée. Au fil des siècles, les ruelles étroites et sinueuses de la vieille ville se font trop étroites pour la circulation des hommes et des biens.
