Eifel Nationalpark Rurseen und Umgebung [ 13/17 ] Radio Teleskop Effelsberg

It's more than 45 years ago, when the largest steerable radio telescope in the world was installed in the Eifel-Region in Germany. ( The largest fully steerable dish till the year 2000 ) Awesome 100 meters diameter, more than 3,200 metric tons, 84,500 sq. ft. collecting area, are moving in an astonishing speed. The small valley, in the Ahr Hills, where the telescope is installed, is ideal, because the hills are protective barriers against terrestrial electro-magnetic sources and it's east-west-alignment gives the opportunity to compensate the rotation of the Earth. Part of film-sets: (e.g.) In a 1972s German SF-Serial "Alpha-Alpha" (A kind of early X-files). And in the crime comedy series "Mord mit Aussicht" (Murder with a View) in 2010 The radio telescope is only a receiver, so there is no electro-magnetic radiation emitted. A small information-center offers frequently astronomical-lectures. Recommended for laypersons and school classes. Important!!! If you leave your car at the car park to take a walk to the viewing point nearby the telescope, please leave your mobile in the car - or at least switch it off. Your cell phone will disturb the receiver!! To use a video-drohne near the site is strictly forbidden by the same reason!! The "Max-Planck-Institute Bonn" exercises the property rights of the hole site.
