East Broad Top 16: The Fall Freight Spectacular-November 11, 2023

On a sunny and cool Veteran's Day, we ventured out with our friends at Keeper of Steam Studios to our very first photo charter at the East Broad Top Railroad, hosted by Dynamo Productions. 16 was the star of the charter, with a 9-car train consisting of one boxcar, six hoppers, one combine coach and one caboose. The Dynamo Productions charter consisted of both day and night sessions, which provided various opportunities for photographers and videographers to capture recreations of a bygone era in railroading. Actors and antique vehicles were used at various locations in order to recreate scenes from the EBT in its later operations. We would like to thank the folks at Dynamo Productions for organizing this incredible photo charter and providing an affordable and unforgettable experience for both photographers and videographers alike. We would also like to thank the actors, volunteers, and staff of the East Broad Top Railroad and Friends of the East Broad Top Railroad for preserving a one-of-a-kind piece of history. For more information on Dynamo Productions, please visit their website: https://www.dynamo-productions.com/ For more information on donating or becoming a member of Friends of the East Broad Top, please visit their website: https://febt.org/ EBT 16 History: 16 was built in June 1916 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA for the East Broad Top and was delivered later that same year. 16 was the first of three large Mikado (2-8-2) type locomotives built for the EBT. 16 worked for the EBT hauling hoppers full of coal and other freight. In 1956, 16's fire was dropped for the last time. Having sat dormant in Orbisonia since being retired in 1956, 16 was inspected in 2020 for possible restoration to operating condition by the Friends of the East Broad Top Railroad, a non-profit organization that currently owns and operates the railroad. Work started on 16 later that year and in 2021, 16 was named "Nick", in honor of Nick Kovalchick, the man who saved the original East Broad Top Railroad. On February 1, 2023, 16 performed its very first successful test runs under steam and is currently the only operable steam locomotive on the EBT.
