Cross-dressing country singer Tina C wants to be your lifestyle guru

(26 Sep 2003) STORYLINE: 1. Sit down interview with performer Tina C, talks about: performing in Edinburgh; her new show 'Lifestyle Guru', seminar not a show - brings a range of principles with stories of her experience, focusing on individuals; Nashville; country music and the tradition of extending a metaphor; her new album; Country Music Awards; on why she keeps coming back to perform the Edinburgh Festival; her own tartan; future plans - US Tour 'I'm Just Roadkill On the Freeway of Your Love'; reactions from Edinburgh audiences, on being religious. Soundbites include: "I've been here so many times now, I've had my own special tartan made and yeah, it's original - it's this great colour match. It's a tartan made of tangerine and fuscia and it's an instant Scotch classic. So that's how at home I feel here." "Well it came from a sense of guilt I think. Like say I've been focusing on global issues, and really I decided it was time to take my mind off you know, the conflict in Iraq - I've been over entertaining the troops and all - and really, just to sort of get back to sort of individual people's lives. You know some people would say that these people are insignificant, disenfranchised, ordinary people but I say that they are potential record-buying public and I love them." "I think a lot of people have some issues around fear when they first come and let's just say, I break that down within the first five minutes and there's a lot of tension, there's a lot of Scotch/UK tension and people are kind of uptight and I really just break that down and I get people 'Yeehaw-ing' and shouting 'Hell, yeah!' and it's like an evangelical rally in here within about five ten minutes, so (laughs)." "I have a lot of personal faith and it's kind of slightly into inter-denominational at the moment. It takes, it's kind of Christian, kind of Buddhist but without the yucky sort of bits of religion of Buddhism, you know. It's basically, I light a colour - orange is so healing, isn't it? (laughs)" 2.
