Medicine & Health: NIR-II bioimaging and biosensing: From materials to AI

Dr Daniel Jaque García, Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), Spain Abstract: Near-infrared II (NIR-II, 900–1700 nm) light has emerged as a powerful tool for bioimaging and biosensing due to its deep tissuepenetration and low scattering. In this talk, I will present how advanced nanomaterials can be designed to emit in the NIR-II window and how their optical response can be used to extract functional information from biological tissues. I will show recent examples where tissue-induced spectral distortions enable label-free sensing of molecular composition. In addition, I will discuss how the combination of suitable materials and artificial intelligence can enable the transition from conventional 2D imaging to 3D information reconstruction. Finally, I will highlight how AI can assist in the analysis of complex optical data, opening new opportunities for real-time and quantitative biomedical imaging.
