Making Bone Black Paint
https://www.damianosborne.com/making-... Making your own oil pigments and using old masters painting materials. Using black in oil painting. In this new series, The Alchemical Journey, I begin with making bone black oil paint. Traditional bone black (or ivory black) is the first pigment in my quest to make my own oil paints, because black represents the first stage of the Alchemist's journey, the Nigredo. Bone black pigment (otherwise now erroneously known as ivory black) has been used for centuries by artists. In this video, I show how I make my own bone black oil paint in the traditional method of the old masters. Don't miss out on the blog where I've written a whole lot more information about comparing the different black pigments. https://www.damianosborne.com/making-... 00:00 - 00:56 Intro. 00:56 - 04:06 Preparing the bones and calcining them on the fire for 10 hours. 04:06 - 09:27 Grinding, washing and preparing the bone black pigment. 09:27 - 19:00 Measuring out pigment, mulling and making the bone black oil paint. 19:00 - 22:35 Filling the paint tube with fresh oil paint. 22:35 - 26:27 Colour testing, comparing bone black with carbon black oil paint.
