EP98: From the Ruins of the Renaissance to a European Power: Italy's Long Road to Unification
For over fifteen centuries, Italy existed only as a geographical expression—a patchwork of quarreling city-states, foreign-controlled duchies, and papal territories, endlessly fought over by France, Spain, and Austria. The very name "Italy" once referred only to the southernmost tip of the peninsula, gradually expanding northward to cover the entire "boot" we know today. This land, which had once illuminated the world with the glory of Rome and the brilliance of the Renaissance, seemed to have lost its way. From the ashes of the Renaissance to unification in 1870, Italy's path was long, tortuous, and often humiliating. It was forged through a remarkable relay of idealists and realists: Napoleon's invasion unexpectedly planted the seeds of national consciousness; Mazzini's secret societies kept the dream alive; Cavour's shrewd diplomacy manipulated the great powers; Garibaldi's thousand Red-shirts conquered a kingdom; and Bismarck's iron fist helped deliver Venice. Yet even after unification, Italy remained the "weakest of the great powers"—a country that had created a state, but had yet to create Italians. This is the story of a country born late, and the price it paid.
