In order to make a truly modern low-floor bus or trolleybus, a portal drive axle is required. In Russia and the countries of the former USSR, such axles were never produced. Therefore, before the sanctions, Russian equipment manufacturers were supplied with portal axles by European companies, primarily ZF, but now there is only a Chinese alternative, usually the HanDe brand. Meanwhile, import substitution is working: the Russian company Rostar, a manufacturer of suspensions and axles for buses, trucks and trailers, has begun making original portal axles. The body is cast by a subsidiary, Rostar Metallurgy. It is important that the portal axle is not a one-off, but is already practically a mass-produced one. About fifty units have been shipped to various customers. The LiAZ and Sinara are completing testing. Note that this unit is not being certified on its own, but rather as part of a bus, the type approval for which includes the new component. It is rated for 13 tons, meaning it is a bridge for large vehicles, but can be adapted to buses and trolleybuses of various models.
