The James Webb Space Telescope captured the exact moment when dust begins to turn into a planet around the star Hops 315, 13 light-years away. In this video, we show how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) identified, for the first time in the history of astronomy, the exact instant when the dust of a protoplanetary disk begins to condense into rock — the first concrete step in the formation of a rocky planet like Earth. The star Hops 315, located 13 light-years away in the constellation Orion, is only 150,000 years old and is still enveloped in a dense cocoon of gas and dust. Even so, the infrared spectra captured by JWST revealed hot silicon monoxide and solid silicate crystals in the inner regions of its disk — the same materials found in the oldest condensates of our own solar system. Complementing the James Webb observations, the ALMA radio telescope in the Atacama Desert mapped the cold regions of the disk and confirmed that the concentration of silicon and carbon was surprisingly low—possibly because planets are already forming and absorbing these elements. This discovery, published in the journal Nature by Melissa McClure and her team at Leiden University, changes what we know about when planetary formation begins: not decades after the star's birth, but almost the instant it is born.
