I’ve been following the growth of Punch-kun at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden. Since I visit frequently, I usually film from the back rather than the front row. I watch Punch-kun through the gaps in the crowd. Of course, if the place is completely empty, I’ll watch from the front row, but otherwise, I stay in the back. I watch from the back during feeding time, too. Punch-kun is a Japanese macaque born on July 26, 2025. He began living on the monkey mountain at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden on January 19, 2026. He does have a mother, but due to the summer heat and the fact that it was her first birth, she ended up abandoning him. Keepers raised him initially since he couldn't survive on his own, but they decided that keeping him hand-reared forever wouldn't be best for him; so, on January 19, 2026, they released him onto the monkey mountain to see how he would fare. When he first arrived, he was bullied by various older monkeys but endured it desperately; watching him grow little by little was truly inspiring. As for the orangutan plushie Punch-kun carries (nicknamed "Oran-Mama"): Japanese macaques, like humans, grow up being raised by their mothers, and the lack of a mother causes stress. When keepers gave him an IKEA orangutan plushie, he started hugging it. Apparently, he did the same thing with a Rilakkuma plushie in the past. That other monkey (Otome-chan) reportedly let go of her plushie and became independent around 14 months of age, so Punch-kun might also let go of "Oran-Mama" in a few months. By the way, I hear Otome-chan is also in the same zoo! The sight of him hugging an orangutan plush toy was so adorable that it captivated people around the world and made him a huge hit.
