" Peter Schreier made his first operatic appearance in 1944 as one of the Three Boys in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 1945, he joined the Dresden Boys' Choir (Dresdner Kreuzchor, the choir of the Kreuzkirche or Church of the Cross.) Eleven choir boys perished in the firebombing of Dresden that year, so the surviving boys and teachers lived in a cellar in the outskirts of Dresden. Choirmaster Rudolf Mauersberger noted Peter's musical talent and strong alto voice. Mauersberger assigned many solo parts to Peter as first alto and even included in his own compositions parts for Peter, including the Dresdner Requiem. Recordings of Peter were made from 1948-51 until his voice broke at age 16. He made his tenor debut in 1959, became highly successful, retired from the opera stage in 2000, and from performing in 2005.
