During my recent visit to Gulhi Island, located just 25 minutes by speedboat from Malé City and well-known for its thriving local tourism, charming guesthouses, pristine beaches, and engaging watersports activities, I had the opportunity to meet some of the island’s pioneering female entrepreneurs in the souvenir trade. I documented their inspiring journey and the valuable services they provide to visitors through their handcrafted and imported souvenirs. These women began their business in the early 1980s, selling simple items such as corals and handmade crafts. With limited resources at the time, they would store their products in bags and wait on the beach whenever tourists arrived on the island. What started as a humble effort has now flourished into a sustainable livelihood. Today, thanks to support from the Island Council, they, along with a few men who have joined the business, operate dedicated souvenir shops conveniently located near the beach. These shops offer a safer, more suitable environment to engage with customers and grow their income. Reflecting on their long journey, they fondly recount the challenges they overcame and express deep appreciation for the improved opportunities and quality of life they enjoy today. More than four decades since they first ventured into this trade, these proud entrepreneurs continue to serve Gulhi’s visitors with resilience, dignity, and unwavering pride.
