In Lecture No. 154 from the "History of Russia" series, Boris Kipnis briefly describes the state of the Russian army on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, and also describes the Russian Empire's strategic and tactical preparations for military action. Given that the Russian army was only slightly larger than the Turkish one at the start of the war, railways became crucial, allowing troops to receive timely reinforcements. In terms of foreign policy, concessions had to be made to Romania, and in exchange for support for Russian troops, Dobruja, historically a Bulgarian territory, was promised in the event of success. This laid the foundation for future mistrust between Bulgaria and Russia, as Dobruja was a strategically important territory, providing access to the Black Sea.
