MGA AWIT NG PAGKAMULAT: "Babae" by Inang Laya
"Babae" by Inang Laya Performed by Cooky Chua As part of our Martial Law Memory Project, InterAksyon invited Ms. Cooky Chua to share some of the music that helped to define - and sustain - a generation of Filipinos that grew to resist the reign of former president Ferdinand Marcos. Cooky Chua is the singer of alternative band Color It Red and a member of the female supertrio Tres Marias. Inang Laya's 'Babae' is testament to how women have always been vital to revolutions and upheavals throughout Philippine history. In the early 80's it became a feminist anthem, with powerful nods to female figures - from the ranks of revolutionaries, activists and even religious orders - that joined the struggle for freedom and democracy.
