FENNELL "American Dream" (for Soprano Cornet with Piano)

This piece. which I composed about a year ago, attempts to capture what my idea of the “American Dream” is. For me, it is not notoriety or wealth, but the appreciation of the simple life my family and I enjoy. Specifically, the imagery I had in mind was that of my kids playing in the backyard on a beautiful summer evening; but the piece is more generally about rare perfect moments. I’ve revised the piece to now include solo parts for woodwinds and orchestral strings, as well as brass. Someday, I’d like to hear this played on soprano saxophone or perhaps viola or cello. As I said when I published the first version of this (for solo flugelhorn) a year ago, “This piece is my attempt to capture the feeling of those fleeting and rare “perfect moments” we all occasionally might experience, when everything (at least in our own little corner of the world) is just right. It can be an almost dreamlike experience if you let it, and as you feel it come to an end, the “just right” feeling may seem to wither, but you are left with happy memories of that moment.
