Hope and Healing: What the Woman Who Touched Jesus' Garment Understood

She had suffered under many physicians, spent everything she had and grown worse rather than better. Then she heard about Jesus. She did not approach him openly. Proximity to Jesus is not the same as trusting Jesus. Many people were close to him. One woman reached for him believing that he was her final hope. Jesus did not expose her to shame her. He brought her into the light so she would no longer leave as an anonymous woman who had stolen a miracle. He wanted her to know that she had been seen, welcomed and restored. Then he called her: “Daughter.” The nameless woman was given belonging. The untouchable woman was received into a family. The person expecting condemnation heard words of peace. Her bleeding stopped immediately, but the physical cure was only part of what Jesus restored. He gave her back her body, dignity, worship, community, identity and peace. At the same time, Jairus’s twelve-year-old daughter was dying. One girl had been alive for twelve years and was moving towards death. One woman had been slowly dying for twelve years and was reaching towards life. Jesus stopped for both. The delay that appeared disastrous did not prevent him from raising the girl. It stretched Jairus’s faith beyond healing and towards resurrection. This story reminds us that Jesus is never too occupied with someone important to stop for someone hidden in the crowd. Whatever has been draining your hope, whatever shame has made you feel untouchable and however long you have carried it, you do not need to make yourself clean before approaching Christ. You only need to reach. Your uncleanness cannot overwhelm his holiness. Your shame cannot make him turn away. Your suffering has not made you invisible. Jesus does not merely want to fix your problem and let you disappear.
