A bee colony usually shows clear signs before it "splits" (flies away to establish a new hive). If you keep bees or see them in the wild, you can recognize this through the following signs: Signs of an impending swarm Bees crowding at the hive entrance Many worker bees enter and exit the hive, crowding the entrance. Bees often swarm the outside of the hive during midday or cool afternoons. Many queen cells appear This is the most important sign. Bees build queen cells larger than usual cells, usually at the edge of the comb. When many queen cells are capped, the likelihood of swarming is very high. The old queen reduces egg production Worker bees limit feeding the queen to keep her light and easy to fly. The number of immature eggs decreases significantly. The colony is too large The frames are densely packed with worker bees. Lack of space for storing honey or for young bees to develop. Bees tend to hang in clusters outside the hive in the evening. Bees become "lazy" Some bees circle in front of the hive instead of collecting nectar. The colony appears restless and unusually active. A few hours before swarming: Bees make a louder-than-normal buzzing sound. Many bees circle in front of the hive as if "scouting." Then a large number of bees will fly out with the old queen. Times when swarming is easiest: The flowering season is strong, with abundant nectar. Warm weather, little rain. In Northern Vietnam, this is usually strong in spring – early summer. If you are raising bees and want to limit swarming: Expand the hive, add more frames. Actively separate the colony before the bees swarm naturally. Remove some queen cells if you don't want to multiply the colony yet. Increase ventilation in the hive.
