Stop Releasing Music Without a Strategy
This clip is the real version of artist development, the one that doesn’t fit in a tweet or a “how to blow up” thread. Paris Cole and I get into what it actually takes to develop and break an artist when you don’t have unlimited budget, unlimited team, or unlimited patience from the industry. The headline is simple: there is no single blueprint for releasing music. Rollout strategy has to match the artist’s sound, identity, and stage of career. That means thinking beyond the songs into release planning, sequencing, visual identity, artwork, storytelling, content strategy, fan engagement, music videos, pop-ups, live reps, and community touch points, and sometimes it means dropping the record first and building the ecosystem backward. Paris also breaks down the part most people don’t like admitting: great A&R instincts are often intuition. “Spirit.” A gut-level yes. If she has to convince herself it’s special, she won’t build on it, because in the music business, betting years of your life on “maybe” is the fastest way to burn out. We also talk about sustainability. Choosing projects based on passion instead of clout, protecting your creative “sauce,” and how she’s stayed afloat through consulting, styling, directing, and creative agency work, including social impact campaigns. Then we get into the call that pulled her back into management during COVID, Maryland artist Kiah Victoria, and what it looks like putting out independent music through distributor turnover, corporate acquisitions, and limited infrastructure. If you’re building an artist today, you’ll hear the truth: some careers need studio lockouts, musicians, and real time, not just a laptop and hope. This closes where most real conversations should: the underdog season. The invisible years. The long in-between before the “winning season” shows up. That’s the job. Simply put, a conversation like this doesn't come cheap.
