Nasotracheal suctioning (NTS) - 3D animation

Nasotracheal suctioning (NTS) is a special technique that uses the nasal cavity as a route for the insertion of a suction catheter into the trachea through the larynx (nasopharynx). This medical animation describes the surgical procedure to remove secretions obstructing the trachea and nasal (nostrils) airway. In some instances, this procedure is used to obtain secretions for diagnostic purposes, or to prevent infection that can occur from accumulated secretions known as nasal congestion. Nasotracheal catheter insertion is a blind technique, closely resembling a difficult airway management technique in which a gum elastic bougie with a coudé angled tip is inserted in the trachea in a more or less blind way. It is a useful procedure in critically ill patients whose ability to cough and mobilize secretions is impaired. The surgery is safe, and an effective alternative to oral suctioning, especially for patients with oral obstructions such as loose dentures or patients who are unable to cooperate with oral suctioning.
