Walking the Melaka River on a Quiet Monday | Otters, Monitor Lizards & St. Peter’s Church

Melaka on a Monday is a completely different world compared to the bustling crowds of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The weekend tourists have gone home, the party is over, and the city basically shuts down for a rest day. Perfect time for me to do what I do best — walk the whole way instead of taking the easy option. I started at the mouth of the Melaka River on the strait and followed the river all the way up to St. Peter’s Church (the oldest functioning Catholic church in Malaysia) and then all the way back. Along the way I got to experience a quiet, peaceful Melaka: beautiful riverside walkways, friendly pedestrian bridges, and best of all — an incredible amount of wildlife! I spent a long time watching a whole family of river otters hunting fish, vocalizing like crazy, plus some seriously big monitor lizards and even a cheeky macaque that nearly climbed on my head. I also discovered why the river used to have drawbridges, explored tree-stump walls, pondered some complex tree lighting systems, walked through a traditional Malay village, and stumbled across an abandoned monorail attraction. I was tempted by the river cruise boats for my return journey… until I found out it was 50 ringgit for a one-way trip. So of course I just kept walking..
