Francisco Pacho Maturana | El fútbol es una utopía que vive en el pasado

Francisco "Pacho" Maturana | Football is a Utopia Living in the Past Pacho arrived at this conversation without needing to prove anything. And that is, perhaps, the first sign that what you find here is different. In this episode, Pacho speaks. With the calm of someone who has already traveled almost the entire road, he learned that words carry more weight when spoken slowly. Fresh, somewhat nostalgic, and happy to finally revisit chapters that time and fame buried under a single phrase he now prefers not to repeat. He talks about what he does, about how he remains tied to football with the same conviction as always. He establishes the differences between the game of then and now, between the language that built identities and the one that today manufactures stars in two plays. Because Maturana, with immense precision, affirms that prudence has disappeared, and with it, the ability to measure what one has before celebrating it. He recalls his early years as the Colombian national team's coach and the phrase that changed everything: "I know how Paraguay plays, I know how Uruguay plays, but I don't know how Colombia plays. It's time to show everything we have." Therein lay the seed of it all. Ricardo de León, Luis Cubilla, the Argentinians, Michels. A silent school that transformed Colombian football from within. He speaks of the 1990 World Cup with the undiminished emotion of someone who experienced something the country still hasn't fully grasped, and of the USA '94 World Cup with all its weight. He remembers again, with goosebumps, the threat against Barrabás Gómez, all under the guise of protection that was conspicuously absent and which, ultimately, led him to feel a true defeat. A defeat that didn't register on any scoreboard. Andrés Escobar appears in the conversation as he always appears in the memories of those who knew him: obliquely, with the pain of what could have been avoided but wasn't. He speaks of Atlético Nacional and its fans with the pure love of someone who built something great there. He speaks of Hugo Gallego and what it means to have people who shape you as a man and as a footballer simultaneously. And so he utters the phrase—because he's a man of phrases—"football is a utopia. Football doesn't exist, because you can only talk about what has already happened," and adds that "nobody knows what's going to happen, because the next match depends on the players and their circumstances. And only the player knows those." A philosopher with a coaching background and a degree in dentistry. The most important Colombia has ever had, although he'd never admit it.
