In 1898, a German expedition unearthed a small clay tablet from the ruins of Nippur, one of the oldest cities in human history. It was cracked, covered in dirt, and inscribed with such dense cuneiform script that the lead archaeologist set it aside for later. This tablet lay in a museum drawer in Istanbul for almost a hundred years. No one published it. No one photographed the reverse side.
