Tampere finland July 2026

Tampere is a Finnish city and the regional center of Pirkanmaa, situated on the shores of lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The city has a population of approximately 263,000. The core of Tampere’s urban area lies on an isthmus between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi—an area characterized by lakes and eskers—where the Tammerkoski rapids flow from Näsijärvi to Pyhäjärvi. The drop of the Tammerkoski rapids is 18 meters. The red-brick factory buildings along its banks bear witness to Tampere’s industrial history; indeed, Tampere was historically Finland’s first and largest industrial city. The landscape of the Tammerkoski rapids has been designated as one of Finland’s national landscapes. Although King Gustav III founded Tampere in 1779, the city only began to grow significantly after the mid-19th century, when it became a major industrial hub. The textile industry, in particular, was extensive. Since then, industrial production has largely relocated away from the city, and Tampere’s economy has shifted its focus to services and high-tech companies.
