In this video, I will be breaking down the high fashion and use of neuroaesthetics in The Neon Demon, a psychological horror film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. I'll be covering the brands showcased in the film, the meaning behind the pieces, and the psychology of fashion utilized to create an alternative world where "Beauty isn't everything, it's the only thing." The film uses a very fabricated realm with stereotypes of the fashion industry as a backdrop for characters who serve as vehicles to explore very played up vanity and tropes and the concept of beauty. Costume in any film is crucial to storytelling, especially in a film that focuses so much on style and the concept of obsession in relation to beauty. The style of each character in this film visually carries the story as well in a very unique way. Rather than being an extension of each character the fashion in this in a horror film adds a degree of darkness even in broad daylight and lighter scenes that creates an unseen heaviness that is very complex, but obviously felt by all characters.
