Beautiful Dry Stone Arch Bridge.
Jason Potter and Tracey Mcrae-Potter of Living Stone Walling build a huge dry stone arch bridge in the Yorkshire countryside. This was built using a mix of reclaimed and freshly quarried Yorkshire stone. Reinforced concrete abutments were installed prior to construction to ensure large heavy vehicles could pass over the bridge without affecting the integrity of the bridge over time. The arch span was completely dry or mortar free. The span was approximately 6m long and 4.5m wide. Each of the 756 individually crafted voussoirs are carefully placed on top of a temporary formwork to create an arch. A key stone is then installed across the width of the arch which tightly holds the structure in place and the formwork can then be dropped. At this point the structural strength of the arch is almost infinite (if the abutments do not fail). "This was a pleasure to build. Although the work was hard and sometimes a little stressful, we are extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to create such a legacy in the landscape. We are extremely happy with how this bridge turned out and it has given us a lot of confidence to show how traditional stone working methods can be used on technical projects. After all, nothing looks quite as nice as Yorkshire stone!"
