A long-lost bronze sculpture of Alexander the Great has resurfaced in Greece. According to archaeologists, it's a fake. The documentary follows archaeologist Stephan Lehmann on his hunt for art forgers. To date, Stephan Lehmann has uncovered some 50 works suspected of being forgeries—in the art market, in private collections, and even in museums. Now, a large bronze sculpture of Alexander the Great has reappeared in Greece. Its owner is a British art dealer, and it was returned to Greece as looted art. According to Lehmann and other experts, it's a forgery. With his work, archaeologist Lehmann doesn't win many friends; in the world of art dealing and museums, silence on the subject of forgeries is the preferred approach. But a Swiss collector, wishing to remain anonymous, grapples with the question of authenticity versus forgery and sends Lehmann a bronze portrait of Emperor Augustus, supposedly ancient but highly dubious, which he bought for several hundred thousand dollars in New York. Lehmann examines it and commissions an analysis from the Fraunhofer Institute, which boasts one of the world's most powerful computed tomography scanners, capable of evaluating the piece from a materials perspective. How do forgers operate? The documentary follows the trail of art forgers and takes us into the usually secretive world of the antiquities trade, revealing that their works even appear in restitutions of looted art.
