He barely flinched when I reached out a hand, so desperate for warmth and care that he set aside all his wariness of strangers. I made up my mind to take him home, but my family refused to let me keep this stray cat. Torn between my family and the tiny life I’d promised to protect, I had to temporarily house him in an abandoned building, using my own jacket to line a cabinet and make him a warm nest. In the end, I chose to leave home with the kitten, now named Doubao. We wandered the streets with no clear destination, shared a simple meal of hand-torn beef on the sidewalk, and spent our first truly safe night in a small hotel room. Through every uncertain step, Doubao stayed by my side, quiet and trusting, even when he had no idea where we were going. Today, we finally have our own pet-friendly apartment. Doubao has gone from a freezing stray fighting to survive in the snow to the beloved king of our home: he fakes sleep to soak up his blow-dry spa treatment, binges Tom and Jerry and meows to demand more episodes when I turn off the projector, and explores every corner of his new space without a single trace of fear.
