Greek Mythology Explained: Apollo vs the Giants, and the Nine Muses (Episode 11)

Two giants once stacked three mountains just to storm the gates of heaven. This is how their ambition ended — and how Apollo, in the very same breath, learned to fill a room with nothing but music. In this episode of Greek Mythology Explained, we meet Ephialtes and Otos, twin giants who tore Mount Ossa and Mount Pelion from the earth and stacked them atop Olympus itself, all to capture Hera and Artemis as their wives. They came dangerously close — even trapping the war god Ares inside a bronze jar for thirteen humiliating months. It took a real, hard-fought battle from Hermes to free him, and Apollo's silver bow to finally end the giants' ambition for good. There's another version of that ending too, one where the credit belongs to Artemis and a single, clever trick. Then the story turns entirely. We follow Apollo to Mount Parnasse, where he spends his days with the nine Muses — daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of Memory, each one guiding a different art: epic poetry, tragedy, comedy, dance, history, the stars themselves.
