The Holy City, Miss Carrie Lanceley.

The first time I've heard a female vocal version of this 1892 Stephen Adams classic. This C.1914 recording is by the Australian operatic Diva Carrie Lanceley & she really gives a spirited & colourful performance, sadly causing some blasting. Singers were required to back off from the recording horn on the loud parts to avoid this, but maybe it would have cramped her style! Here's a tamer & more listenable version:    • The Holy City, Hardy Williamson.   Normally a 12" record would be required for this ballad, but the Marathon disc, with its narrow groove vertical cut, comfortably fits this 5min performance on a 10" disc. Played on my 1913 vintage Marathon gramophone.
