Bethena - A Concert Waltz, by Scott Joplin
Joplin published this solemn work in March, 1905, six months after the death (from pneumonia) of his 19-year-old wife, Freddie. They had been married for just ten weeks. I have tried to play this piece with a degree of sadness and devotion, as I imagine Joplin may have felt composing it.
