Lateral epicondylitis is a condition of inflammation, soreness, or pain on the outside (lateral side) of the elbow. Usually seen in patients who perform labor or sports that require twisting and extension of the wrist against resistance. Degeneration, irritation, tears and pain of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendons. Treatment includes •Ice •Elbow pad •Decreased activity •Physical therapy •Eccentric exercises •Injections (steroids or PRP) •Surgery as a last resort. Injection •Locate and mark the point of maximum tenderness over the lateral epicondyle. •Injection of steroids for treatment of lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow) is common, however PRP injection and needling is becoming popular. •The injection site is disinfected with betadine. •Introduce the needle to the insertion site. •Needling of the tendon may promote faster healing of the injury. •Advance needle to the lateral epicondyle then inject the solution (PRP, steroid, lidocaine) •May reexamine the elbow after a few minutes to confirm pain relief.
