What are tumor treating fields?

Minesh P. Mehta, MD, FASTRO, Miami Cancer Institute, Miami, FL, shares fascinating insights into the use of tumor treating fields (TTFields) in cancer. TTFields are a non-invasive, anti-mitotic treatment modality using alternating electric fields to induce replication stress and subsequent cell death. The therapy was first approved for use in glioblastoma before more recent approval for malignant pleural mesothelioma. TTFields are a promising option in lung cancer, with a number of recent pre-clinical studies demonstrating anti-mitotic activity in lung cancer models, and early phase non-small cell lung cancer trials indicating signs of efficacy.
