Mathews Apopo - AMPATH Scholarship recipient 2023

For more than 30 years, Indiana University School of Medicine and Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya have participated in faculty and student exchanges through the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) partnership. IU faculty travel to Kenya and work under Kenyans, deliver care and train people to be doctors and researchers. IU trainees go to live and learn alongside their Kenyan counterparts, learning resourcefulness, creativity and compassion. Meanwhile, more than 80 Kenyan students and medical residents (known as registrars) have come to Indiana for training. The goal is to take the best from both settings, learn from one another, and support the Kenyans as they expand their health care system. One of the Kenyan students who made the journey is Mathews Apopo. Here’s his story.
