How Thin Is Gold Leaf? (And How I Use It in Urushi)
How thin is gold leaf, really? In this video I show you how I apply gold leaf on urushi fountain pens — step by step, the way I actually do it in the workshop. We start with thickness: Japanese gold leaf vs Western gold leaf, and why I sometimes use wazumi gold, which is significantly thicker. Then I walk you through preparation of the surface, mixing and filtering hakushi-urushi, adjusting viscosity with kijomi-urushi, and applying an extremely thin adhesive layer before gilding. You will see: 00:00 Gold Leaf Thickness Explained 01:25 Japanese vs Western Gold (and Wazumi) 02:24 Preparing Hakushi-urushi & Kijomi-urushi 03:39 Hakeme-nuri Surface & Layer Structure 04:31 Applying the Adhesive Layer 07:32 Gilding Process & Handling Gold Leaf 12:35 Layer Thickness, Kawarinuri & Building Gold Lines 15:07 Detailing Threads & Furo Curing This is not decorative gilding. This is structural gilding inside kawarinuri and layered urushi work. Gold leaf is unbelievably thin — it reproduces every detail beneath it. The final visual result depends entirely on how the layers underneath were built and how the gold is sealed and layered afterward. At the end of the video I explain curing stages in the furo and humidity control before sealing the gold in the next step. If you are interested in real urushi process — not just finished pieces — this video is for you. — Handmade urushi fountain pens Tamenuri Studio Instagram: @tamenuri_studio Website: https://tamenuri.com
