This week, we delve into the spectacular rise and catastrophic self-destruction of Travis Meeks, the teenage prodigy from Charlestown, Indiana, who took over MTV with nothing but a downtuned acoustic guitar and a voice that sounded like Layne Staley possessed by Jim Morrison. What happened to Days of the New is one of the most ego-driven implosions in the history of 90s alternative rock. His debut single "Touch, Peel and Stand" hit number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and stayed there for sixteen consecutive weeks. The album went platinum. Metallica personally invited Days of the New to open their 1998 summer stadium tour. Travis Meeks was the biggest new rock star in America before he could legally drink. And then he systematically destroyed everything. He fired his entire band mid-tour, called them talentless on national radio, hired Nicole Scherzinger as a backup singer before she became a Pussycat Doll, blew a Velvet Revolver audition while completely out of his mind, alienated every label executive who gave him a chance, and ended up on A&E's Intervention looking like a ghost of the kid who once headlined arenas. The fired bandmates went on to form Tantric and score their own hit singles without him. Travis attempted one final reunion tour in 2014 that ended with him stumbling around a stage in St. Louis while his bassist apologized to the audience and walked off for good. This is the story of the fastest ego-driven implosion in 90s alternative rock history—from number one to a criminal most wanted list in under five years.
