There are probably few people who have evoked such a controversial reaction, both among their contemporaries and among their descendants, as Prince Felix Felixovich Yusupov. His name is most often associated with the murder of Grigory Rasputin, and it was this biographical fact that left its mark on his subsequent life and forced him to examine the events that preceded the fateful events at the Moika. He repeatedly attempted to make sense of his life, to come to terms with himself and the times. In 1927, Yusupov, by then an émigré, published his memoirs in Russian in Paris, entitled "The End of Rasputin," which told the world about the events of that December night of 1916 and what preceded them. A quarter of a century later, two books of memoirs by F. F. Yusupov, "Before Exile. 1887-1919" and "In Exile," were published in Paris. Felix Felixovich Yusupov, Jr. Born March 11 (24), 1887, in St. Petersburg, he died October 27, 1967, in Paris and is buried in the Russian cemetery in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois. In the audiobook "Before Exile," you'll find stories to suit every taste. First and foremost, the story of the Yusupov family, little known to most. Felix Yusupov's actions, which astonished and intrigued many, elevated him to the ranks of notable historical figures and, in a way, overshadowed the worthy deeds of his distant ancestors, who made one of Russia's most illustrious aristocratic families famous. The author's memoirs of his family are extremely intriguing, as they contain everything a listener could possibly find interesting: their daily routine, everyday life, their circle of acquaintances, descriptions of the interiors of the palaces, mansions, and villas where the Yusupovs lived, all written with great pleasure by the author, numerous humorous and endearing details of that distant life, his relationship with his parents, endless amusements and recreations, his relationship with his older brother, and the story of his death. The most sincere and warm words are addressed to his mother, Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova, adored by her youngest son, who considered her his closest friend. Alongside the family story is the author's own story, told at times with frightening candor and openness. Concluding his book, Felix Yusupov wrote: "Leaving our homeland on April 13, 1919, we knew that exile would be no less a trial, but who among us could have foreseen that thirty-two years later, it would still have no end in sight?" Perhaps the time for return has come? The second part of the publication consists of an audio version of letters from the Yusupov archive, selected and kindly provided to us by Natalia Borisovna Strizhova, a senior researcher in the Department of Written Sources. The inclusion of these letters in the publication is no coincidence. They complement the Prince's memoirs, and their intimate and frank nature allows one to delve even deeper into the atmosphere of those distant events. The translation of "Before the Exile 1887-1919" was done by Olga Valeryanovna Edelman, PhD in history and a leading specialist at the State Archives of the Russian Federation. General editor: Gennady Nikolaevich Kalashnikov. The selection and publication of the letters was carried out by Natalia Borisovna Strizhova, a senior researcher in the Department of Written Sources at the State Historical Museum. The book was read by Sergey Chonishvili, Honored Artist of Russia, one of the most sought-after theater and film actors, and a voice-over guru.
