Arizona’s Ancient Mummy Mystery: The Mind-Blowing Underground Discovery

March 11, 1895. Yavapai County, Arizona. Walter Burns, a shift foreman with 11 years of underground experience, descended into the "Continental" mine for a standard post-blast inspection. At a depth of 200 feet (60 meters), he didn't find a gas pocket or a natural cavern. He discovered a chamber carved from solid granite with a perfectly level floor and eight recessed niches. Inside each niche sat a figure. Mummified remains measuring between 18 and 24 inches (45–60 cm) tall, positioned cross-legged and facing the entrance. Their proportions were those of fully developed adults, not infants. The surrounding geological layer indicated the burial was at least 3,000 years old. Three weeks after the discovery, Lawrence Hayward, a field agent for the Smithsonian Institution, arrived at the site. Four days later, Burns found a new lock on the chamber entrance—one he didn't have a key for. Today, the mine is sealed with a concrete plug. Hayward’s records are conspicuously absent from the Smithsonian’s public archives. The only evidence of these beings remains in six pages of Burns' field diary, containing detailed sketches and measurement tables, currently held in the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott. In this video, we reconstruct the timeline of March 1895 through surviving logs and newspaper reports of the era. Who were these beings, and why did the "proper federal authorities" ensure they were forgotten forever?
