Despite the many means she possessed to make her art, one common theme would always be apparent in her work. As is the unfortunate case with most dark art such as these works, normally the artist behind them carries a life story plagued by tragedy, and Kollwitz sadly would be no exception. Suffering from the loss of family members, including her own son, as well as unstable mental health since her childhood, it almost comes to little wonder how shadowy pictures such as these would be so prevalent in her collection.
