Wambui came to Adelaide to complete a Masters and met Mark at the casino. Mark has only travelled overseas once before to Hawaii and his brother had never even met an African person before. In order for the marriage to take place, Mark’s family must negotiate a dowry for Wambui. As a Kikuyu woman she is worth ninety-nine goats but Mark must participate in the strenuous negotiations – in secret. And following that, he must choose his bride out of a line up of completely covered women. If he gets it wrong, he could be fined. A trip to the largest slum in Africa is confronting for Mark, reducing him to tears. Marrying Wambui gives him a greater connection to this new world, which is a million miles away from the one in which he grew up. So the boy from the Adelaide ‘burbs is in for a huge culture shock in Nairobi.
